Aaron Sorochan (Edmonton, AB, 2nd) made 37 saves as the #2 ranked Alberta Golden Bears (15-3-3 Canada West) hung on for a 3-2 victory over the visiting #3 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies (13-7-1 Canada West) Friday night in Edmonton.
Sorochan the 2005-06 CIS Rookie of the Year was especially good in a third period that saw the Huskies outshot Alberta 14-1 to the stunned amazement of 2317 fans at historic Clare Drake Arena who watched the Bears improve to 9-1 at home this season and 135-8-6 over the last six-plus seasons.
“Aaron played very well for us tonight and gave us a chance to win, and we did enough (offensively) to get that win,” said Golden Bears Head Coach Eric Thurston following the game which saw the Huskies outshoot Alberta 39-19 on the night.
The Bears actually carried the play early in the game outshooting Saskatchewan early in the first period 6-1. Freshman Kyle Fecho (Hanna, AB) opened the scoring with just 15 seconds left in the opening stanza as his long-range bomber hit a Huskies’ defender in front of the goal to deflect past Saskatchewan netminder Jeff Harvey (St. Albert, AB, 2nd) to make it 1-0 Alberta after one.
Alberta made it 2-0 on the powerplay just three minutes into the second as Ben Kilgour (Leduc, AB, 3rd) banged home a rebound for his 13th powerplay goal of the season.
The Huskies cut the Bears lead to one as Stephen Mann’s (Lac Vert, SK, 3rd) screened shot from the point was stopped by Sorochan but Curtis Austring (Stewart Valley, SK, 2nd) swatted home a rebound into a yawning cage at 9:21 to make it 2-1.
The Bears restored their two goal just 17 seconds later as Tyler Metcalfe (Headingly, MAN, 2nd) was left alone in front and he beat Harvey low to the stick side.
The Huskies though got right back in it as while killing a penalty Jeff Schmidt (Kindersley, SK, 3rd) undressed Alberta captain Harlan Anderson on a one-one-one, and then wristed a shot past Sorochan to make it 3-2 at 13:25 of the second.
Sorochan held the fort the rest of the way for the Golden Bears who now move six points ahead of the Huskies in the overall Conference standings.
The Bears finished the game 1-for-5 on the powerplay while Saskatchewan went 0-for-6.
The two teams meet again Saturday night at 7:30 PM MST (FM88-CJSR) in Edmonton.
