The #2 ranked Alberta Golden Bears (16-3-3 Canada West, 21-6 overall) capitalized on opportunistic scoring to earn a 7-5 home ice victory over the visiting #3 ranked Saskatchewan Huskies (13-8-1 Canada West) Saturday night at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.
For the second consecutive night the Bears were outshot badly (37-24) but Aaron Sorochan (Edmonton, AB, 2nd), the 2005-06 CIS Rookie of the Year, was solid in between the pipes as the two-time defending National Champions moved eight points ahead of the hard-working Huskies for top spot overall in the Canada West.
“We found a way. But, obviously we have some work to do,” said Alberta Head Coach Eric Thurston the 2005-06 Canada West Coach of the Year of his team which featured nine freshman skaters in the game including four CIS rookies on the back end.
Ian McDonald (Edmonton, 1st) scored a powerplay and a shorthanded goal in the second period to pace the Alberta attack, while Lee Zalasky (Lloydminster, AB, 2nd), Chad Klassen (Saskatoon, SK, 1st)-with his first career Golden Bears goal, Tim Krymusa (Morden, MB, 4th), Richard Hamula (Edmonton, 4th), and Dale Mahovsky (Fort Saskatchewan, AB, 1st) scored for the Bears in a game that was tied 1-1 after one and 4-4 after two.
Myles Zimmer (Tisdale, SK, 1st), Curtis Austring (Stewart Valley, SK, 3rd), Trent Adamus (Saskatoon, SK, 3rd) and Stephen Mann (Lac Vert, SK, 3rd) replied for the Huskies who probably deserved a better fate this weekend after dominating play in stretches both night.
Jeff Harvey (St. Albert, SK, 2nd) gave up six goals on 23 shots for Saskatchewan.
Alberta went 2-fo-7 on the powerplay, while the Huskies were 3-for-8 on a night when both benches appeared a tad puzzled by some of the calls.
The Golden Bears get a bye next weekend before hosting Lethbridge February 2nd and 3rd (7:30 PM, www.ualberta.ca) at Clare Drake Arena. Saskatchewan travels to Calgary face the Dinos for a pair of games next weekend.
