HUSKIES CLINCH OT WIN
Monette records first CIS win
SASKATOON SK – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies played host to the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns at Rutherford Rink on Campus. This weekend will give the Pronghorns, which stand in fourth place in the Mountain Division, the chance to see how they rank against the Huskies, which are currently in first place in the Great Plains Division, with play-offs just around the corner.
1:46 into the first period Huskies Keegan McAvoy opened up the scoring on Pronghorns goaltender John Haggis. The Pronghorns followed suit quickly with Andrew Courtney putting one past Huskies goalie Russel Monette.
The Dogs and the Horns battled back and forth in the second period as the Dogs Curtis Austring put the Huskies second goal of the game past the Horns defense. The Pronghorns came back and tied up the game with Steve Zmudcynski making the score 2-2.
A goal-less third period set the Horns and the Dogs up for five minutes of sudden death over-time. Huskies Derek Endicott broke the tie 1:23 into the over-time leaving the Huskies to come out on top.
“I think tonight’s game was everything we expected and more. We knew that Lethbridge was going to pressure us all over the ice and also that their penalty kill was very strong and that we were going to have to make plays under pressure to be successful. Quite honestly we turned the puck over twice and they scored twice. I guess credit to us for scoring at the end but also credit to Lethbridge because they’re fighting for a play-off spot and they look like a play-off team,” commented Huskies head coach Dave Adolph after their over-time victory.
The Dogs and Horns meet up again tomorrow night at Rutherford Rink at 7:00pm as both teams position themselves for play-offs.
