Shefchyk Lifts Horns Past Huskies
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns left it to the dying seconds, but managed an overtime victory against the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies in Canada West Men\'s Hockey action Sunday afternoon. The game reversed the fortunes of the previous evening, with the Horns taking the 5-4 victory.
Saskatchewan forward Jeff Schmidt (Kindersly, SK, 3rd) opened the scoring half way into the opening frame when he collected his own rebound and slid it past Horns goaltender John Haggis (Calgary, AB, 3rd). The Horns responded six minutes later on a five on three power play when a wild bounce off the top of the Huskies net found its way across the goal line. The goal was credited to freshman Steve Zmudczynski (Thorold, ON).
Huskies freshman Colin Patterson (Saskatoon, SK) jumped on a rebound and potted his first of the night past a sprawling Haggis from the faceoff circle to regain the Huskie lead. The Horns would not have an answer until the last minute of the second period. From behind the net, Chad Rideout (Fruitvale, BC, 5th) set-up center Logan Lavorato (Lethbridge, AB, 2nd) who was sitting on Huskie netminder Russel Monette\'s (Neville, SK, 1st) doorstep. The teams headed to the dressing room for the second time with the score knotted.
The Huskies again took the lead on Colin Patterson\'s second goal of the night. Horns blueliner Jarret Parkyn (Calgary, AB, 5th) parked himself behind the net six minutes later and delivered the puck right on the tape of Andrew Courtney (Belleville, ON, 1st) who one-timed it past a surprised Monette. Huskies captain Brent Twordik (Saskatoon, SK, 4th) brought down the mood when he converted on a Huskie powerplay. With Haggis on the bench in favour of an extra attacker, Horns rookie Mark Shefchyk (Winnipeg, MB) took a Jason Roberts (Spiritwood, SK, 2nd) pass and tied the score with four seconds left, sending the game to overtime.
Mark Shefchyk dazzled the crowd with his game winning goal, drawing the Huskies goalie out of the net and bringing the puck behind Monette for the goal. The display sent his teammates and the crowd into a frenzy.
Russel Monette stopped 21 of 26 shots to take the loss in his first CIS start, while John Haggis turned away 36 of 40 shots for the victory. With the win the Pronghorns reach the .500 mark at 3-3-2. The Huskies earn the OT point and go to 5-4-1.
