Huskies Sink Horns in a Barn burner
The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns hosted the University of Saskatchewan Huskies who fought an intense battle Saturday night in Canada West Men\'s Hockey action. The game was so evenly matched that it had to be decided in a shoot-out, with the Huskies emerging victorious 5-4.
Pronghorn freshman Andrew Courtney (Belleville, ON) opened the scoring on a short-handed 2 on 1 by shelfing his shot glove side against Huskies backstop Jeff Harvey (St. Albert, AB, 2nd). The Huskies evened the score late in the period when Curtis Austring (Stewart Valley, SK, 3rd) potted a loose rebound from the doorstop.
The Pronghorns opened the second period scoring five minutes in when from behind the goal line Mark Shefchyk (Winnipeg, MB, 1st) set up Shaun Norrie (Calgary, AB, 4th) with a perfect pass. The Horns extended their lead to 2 on a Kris Deines (High River, AB, 1st) shot from the slot. The Huskies would not allow the Horns their two goal lead for long. Huskie freshman Colin Patterson (Saskatoon, SK) cut the lead in half fifty seven second later. Matt Girling (Saskatoon, SK, 2nd) scored the equalizer when he caught Horns tender Brandon Highton (Kitimat, BC, 2nd) going the other way. The teams went to the dressing room tied in score and close in shots 19-18 in favour of the Horns.
Although the third period did nothing to decide the game, it did provide two spectacular goals. The first came when Curtis Austring undressed two Horn defenders to notch his second of the evening. The Horns didn\'t let that goal go unanswered. Devin Featherstone (Calgary, AB) made a brilliant long pass to give fellow freshman Steve Zmudczynski (Thorold, ON) an uncontested shot at Harvey, with which he made no mistake, sending the crowd into hysterics.
Overtime yielded a single shot on net, and the game was left to be decided by shootout. The Saskatchewan shooters made good on their first two attempts, while the Lethbridge shooters could not solve Huskies goalie Harvey. Mason Wallin (Prince Albert, SK, 4th) was credited with the game winning goal.
Huskies goalie Jeff Harvey stopped 21 of 25 shots for the win, while Horns netminder Brandon Highton stopped 21 of 25 shots, but took the loss. The win takes the Huskies above the .500 mark at 5-4-0, while the Horns will take the overtime point to give them a record of 2-3-2. These two teams conclude the weekend series Sunday night at 5pm.
