Skating Dogs sweep Bisons
WALLIN RECORDS SECOND SEASON HAT TRICK
Oct 21
WINNIPEG MB - The No. 5 Saskatchewan Huskies completed the two-game sweep of the Manitoba Bisons Saturday evening, defeating them 5-1 at the Max Bell Arena. Mason Wallin led the charge for the Huskies, scoring three goals and adding a helper. The Huskies, who out-scored the Bisons 12-5 during the weekend, move two-games ahead of the Bisons in the Great Plains Division.
The Bisons, starting the scoring seven minutes into the first period, as
Chris Fallon spotted Aaron Starr in the slot, and he was able to one-time it
past Huskies goalie Jeff Harvey. But with two Bisons in the penalty box, the Huskies were able to tie it up six minutes later. Under pressure, Bison goalie Kirster Toews made two
great saves, but couldn't stop the third as the puck wound up on the stick of Wallin. He was perched to the left of the net and he slid it behind an out-of-position Toews.
The Huskies added one more before the period was out, on another 5-on-3.
Working low, Jeff Schmidt got it to Brett Novak, who was able to put it over a Toews as he was sliding across. Wallin netted his second of night, and the Huskies first even strength goal of the night, two minutes into the second. Aleckcei McAvoy's shot rebounded straight to Wallin, and he made no mistake finding the back of the net.
Novak added his second of the evening, streaking in and firing it from the
slot under Toews' glove hand. Toews was able to get a piece of it, but couldn't squeeze it for the save as the Huskies went up 4-1.
The Bisons had their opportunity to get back into it during the second as
Huskies Greg Park and Colin Patterson both went off for tripping and cross-checking at the same time. That gave the Bisons a full two-minute, two-man advantage, but the Huskies were able to kill them both off.
After penalties led to some 4-on-4 hockey, Wallin completed the hat trick
in the third. He blocked a shot by Bison Jamie Dowhayko, and then recovered
it at his own blue line, skating the length of the ice and sliding by Toews, low on the blocker side.
The remainder of the third became a penalty filled affair. In all, 35
penalties were called for over 100 minutes in penalties.
Harvey didn't need to be as busy Saturday night, making 27 saves for the
win. Toews made 25 in the loss.
Next weekend the Bisons travel to Edmonton as they take on the University of No. 1 Alberta Golden Bears. The Huskies will host the University of Calgary Dinos Oct 27 and 28 at Rutherford Rink on the U of S Campus. Puck drop is 7:00pm both nights.
