Huskies Win with 4 goals from Matt Girling!!!!
The Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Manitoba Bisons 7-4, in
the first game of the weekend series at the Max Bell Arena. The
Huskies move one game above .500, while the Bisons fall one
game below .500.
The Huskies opened the scoring at 3:57 into the first period after
Matt Girling broke in on the left wing and snapped one from the
top of the circle past Bison goalie, Krister Toews. The powerplay
goal came at just seconds before the Bisons could kill off a two-
man advantage, in a penalty plagued first period. In all there were
eight penalties called in the first period.
Girling scored his second of the night after Colin Patterson spotted
him from the point, and he was able to slide it behind a helpless
Toews.
The Bisons got on the scoreboard 1:39 into the second period
when Calin Wild jumped on a Husky rebound. The Bisons then tied
it up three minutes later when Aaron Starr was able to find a
bouncing puck and put it behind a screened Husky goalie, Jeff
Harvey.
Saskatchewan quickly took back the lead 29 seconds later, as
Girling completed the hat trick on a similar goal, batting the puck
behind a sprawled out Toews.
A Husky give-away in the neutral zone, let Bison, Nolan Walker
walk in and score shorthanded near the half way point of the
second period. That evened the score again before Husky, Jason
Wagar was left all alone in front of Toews, and netted his first of
the night with only 33-seconds left in the period.
The Huskies pulled away in the third after a pair of shorthanded
goals. First, Girling netted his fourth of the evening on a give-go
with teammate, Brent Twordik. Then just over a minute later,
Mason Wallin broke free in to the Bisons end to put the Huskies up
by three.
Manitoba got one back after Jamie Dowhayko floated a point shot
past the screened Harvey. But it was too late as Saskatchewan
added an empty netter to make the final score 7-4.
Harvey picked up the win, stopping 38 of 42 shots. Toews stopped
18 in a losing effort for the Bisons.
The Bisons (2-3) face the Huskies (3-2) in game two of the
weekend series, Saturday night at the Max Bell Centre. Game time
is 7:15.
