HUSKIES SWEEP OF DINOS with 3-2 win (video attached)

Coach Adolph Moves into Second place for Wins in Canada West behind the Dean of hockey Clare Drake!!!!

One step closer to clinching division lead
Jan 27

CALGARY – The Saskatchewan Huskies exacted revenge for Calgary’s two-game sweep in Saskatoon earlier this season, duplicating the feat on the Dinos’ ‘home’ ice at Max Bell Arena Saturday night with a 3-2 victory.

Brad Erickson scored 4:08 into the third period to break a 2-2 deadlock and put the visiting Huskies on top for good. On the play, Brett Dickie’s shot missed and bounced off the side of the net and the back boards right onto Erickson’s stick, and he made no mistake beating Calgary goaltender Scott Talbot. Talbot bounced back from an off night Friday – allowing four goals on 14 shots – to stop 26 of 29 shots sent his way Saturday, but the Dinos offense had difficulty cracking the strong defensive play of Saskatchewan.

The game was scoreless for a total of 58 seconds. In the first minute, Matt Girling sent a pass across the crease to Trent Adamus who tipped it high into the yawning cage and gave the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.

The score remained 1-0 for nearly 30 minutes until the Dinos finally solved Saskatchewan netminder Jeff Harvey. Alex Lalonde found Paul Gentile alone in front in a replay of the Huskies’ opening goal, and the game was tied at one.

Just over a minute later, the Huskies’ Derek Endicott was called for holding and it looked as if the momentum would switch to the home side. Harvey stood his ground in goal and the Saskatchewan penalty kill limited Calgary’s shooting opportunities, and the penalty was successfully killed. Adamus added to his scoring total on the night, finding Endicott just out of the penalty box. Endicott took the pass, fought off Calgary defenseman Travis Friedley, and scored a pretty goal with a deke to the backhand high on Talbot’s glove side, giving the Huskies the lead.

The next Calgary powerplay, however, was successful. With the puck down low and a scramble in front, Colin McRae took a shot from a bad angle and the rebound went right to Trevor Galan who scored his fourth of the season and tied it up at 2-2 late in the second period.

The Dinos were swept 4-2 Friday and 3-2 Saturday despite holding Saskatchewan’s leading scorer Mason Wallin to only a single point on the weekend, an assist on the Huskies’ fourth goal Friday night.

The win virtually guarantees Saskatchewan a first-round bye in the Canada West playoffs, with the Huskies holding an eight-point edge on second place Regina with four games to play. The Dinos, meanwhile, sit amidst a logjam for second in the Mountain division, holding a one-point lead over UBC and a two-point edge on Lethbridge. Calgary heads west to face UBC in a two-game series next weekend followed by dates with first-place Alberta and then Lethbridge to close the season.
