2 Calgary vs. Saskatchewan 4 01/26/2007 :: 7:00 pm @ Calgary Attendance: 240
CALGARY – Jason Wagar scored twice and backup goaltender Russel Monette withstood an early Calgary onslaught as the Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the Calgary Dinos 4-2 Friday night at Max Bell Arena in Calgary.
With the score tied at 2-2 midway through the third period, Trent Adamus drew helpers on two quick Saskatchewan goals – only 97 seconds apart – and the Huskies cruised through the final 10 minutes to earn their 14th win of the season.
The first came four-on-four when Jason Wagar fed Adamus on a breakaway. Adamus’ shot missed high, but the rebound bounced off the glass and right to Wagar who fed a backhand into the back of the cage. Just over a minute and a half later, Adamus sent Mason Wallin and Matt Girling in on a two-on-one. Wallin fed a nice pass to Girling on the right side, and Girling made a nice move to the backhand to beat Calgary goaltender Scott Talbot to the stick side.
The late rally by the Huskies came after each team had dominated one of the previous periods. Calgary came flying out of the gate to open the evening, breaking the ice early when Colin McRae scored just over two minutes into the contest. Ryan Annesley took a solo rush up-ice and fought off a pair of Huskies, passing the puck to a wide open McRae in front. McRae deked Monette to the backhand and slid it in to give Calgary the early 1-0 lead. Tyrel Lucas drew the other assist on the goal.
The Dinos took it to the Huskies for the rest of the period, benefiting from three Saskatchewan penalties. The home side outshot Saskatchewan 13-3 in the opening frame and went into the dressing room with a 1-0 lead.
As much as the Dinos were buzzing in the first, Saskatchewan responded in the second period. Keegan McAvoy tied it up at 6:18 when his slap shot from the point made its way through a maze of bodies and a screened Talbot with the Huskies on the man advantage. Eight minutes later, the visitors took the lead when Wagar notched his first, a shorthanded tally from Brent Twordik.
Annesley and Lucas connected again early in the third to tie it up. Calgary enjoyed sustained pressure in the offensive zone, and several Saskatchewan clearing attempts were unsuccessful. Lucas grabbed the loose puck off a Huskie giveaway and fired it on goal, where a waiting Annesley tipped it through Monette’s legs.
Calgary outshot the Huskies 21-14 on the evening, but it was the outstanding performance from Monette in the first period that allowed Saskatchewan to get back into it. The Dinos finished 0-for-8 on the powerplay with one shorthanded goal against – not a solid night on special teams by any standard – while the Huskies went 1-for-6 with the man advantage.
The win puts the Huskies (14-8-1) comfortably ahead of second-place Regina in the Great Plains division, while the loss for Calgary (11-8-2) makes things interesting in the bottom of the Mountain Division. With only seven games remaining, the Dinos sit two points ahead of Lethbridge and three points up on UBC for second place, with a home playoff date on the line. Calgary will play both Lethbridge and UBC in two-game series as they wrap up the season in the coming weeks.
First, however, comes the rubber match with the Huskies, set for Saturday night when the two teams will face off again at the Dinos’ temporary home, Max Bell Arena. Puck drops at 7 pm.
