DOGS SHUT OUT BISONS
Harvey records second shut out in regular season
SASKATOON SK – The No. 6 University of Saskatchewan Huskies took on the unranked University of Manitoba Bisons in game two of the weekend. The Bisons were out for the win with the previous night’s loss, but once again the Huskies came out on top by a score of 4-0.
As Huskies head coach Dave Adolph had predicted, it was a completely different game compared to the night before. The Bisons came out with their game faces on to fight to the end. The teams ended up spending more time in the penalty box than out scoring goals. At the end of the first period the score remained 0-0.
Huskies Brett Twordik opened up the scoring in the second period dumping in a rebound off of Bisons goaltender Krister Toews. The Huskies second single-handed goal followed shortly after with credit going to Brad Erickson. A third immediate goal by Huskies Derek Endicott, assisted by Twordik and Jeff Schmidt, spurred Bisons head coach Don MacGillivray to call a time out. The Huskies fourth goal from Keegan McAvoy ended the period and caused the game to intensify, with things heating up on the ice.
Emotions finally came to a boil in the third period as Huskies Mason Wallin and Bisons Joshua Belair went toe-to-toe. Both players were ejected from the game with the crowd cheering them off the ice. With tempers flaring, the Dogs and Bisons kept the officials on theirs toes calling penalty after penalty. Huskies goaltender Jeff Harvey managed
to keep his composure throughout the game and clinch a shut out.
“We have two really great goaltenders, Russel Monette and Harvey so I had a real difficult decision over night as to who I was going to play today. Russel surely deserved to play but I decided early this morning that it had to be Harvey again tonight and if we gave him the ball all weekend that he would perform well all weekend. He got Player of the Game last night by our team last night and then he got the goose egg tonight, so that\'s huge,\" commented Huskies head coach Dave Adolph on Harvey\'s shut out.
\"It felt pretty good tonight. My d-men were keeping their men to the outside making my job a lot easier. You expect them (Manitoba) to come back hard after a 7-2 loss. We played our game out there but you know we don\'t want to get into penalty trouble. There is no fighting in CIS hockey for a reason so you don\'t like to see that happen,\" stated Huskies Harvey on his composure throughout the game.
Manitoba\'s record drops to 7-10-1. Saskatchewan improves to 10-5-1, maintaining their position atop the Great Plains Division. This weekend signified the end of the Dogs 2006 portion of conference play for the season. The Huskies will hit the ice again in January as they face their provincial rivals, the University of Regina Cougars.
