DOGS HOLD UP THE HERD
MacAvoy racks up six points
SASKATOON SK – The University of Saskatchewan Huskies took on a newly dressed University of Manitoba Bisons at Rutherford Rink on Campus. The Dogs had control of their ice as they took the Bisons 7-2.
The Dogs got off to a great start with Garett Soparlo sinking a rebound off of Bison goaltender Krister Toews, putting the Huskies up on the board. The Huskies were on fire as they scored back-to-back goals by Mark Hinz and Keegan McAvoy, consecutively, putting the Dogs up 3-0.
The Bisons opened up the second period with just over 1:45 left in a five-on-three powerplay when they scored their first goal of the evening by forward Aaron Starr, shutting down Huskies goaltender Jeff Harvey’s perfect game and putting up a 3-1 score. With a fresh Bison tender, Steve Christie, manning the net, the Huskies worked hard to put one past him with Mason Wallin marking down one to put the score at 4-1. McAvoy then sniped his second of the game putting the Dogs up by four.
4:53 into the third period Huskies Hinz scored his second of the game from another five-on-three from McAvoy and Curtis Austring. Less than a minute later at 5:24 the Huskies scored with yet another five-on-three powerplay by Colin Patterson from McAvoy and Hinz. With the Bisons fired up, they came back and scored a short-handed goal by
Richard Wood, assisted by netminder Christie, making the score 7-2.
\"I think it was a tale of two teams, we scored on our powerplay early which I think got us the lead. Things then opened up to our advantage and we scored some pretty good goals. I think whenever there is a three or four goal spread the players are really playing with their hearts and I think that both teams, regardless of the situation, sometimes may look like they\'re getting dirty but I think that Manitoba was fighting until the end. I expect it to be an all out battle again tomorrow night, it always is with these guys,\" comment Huskies head coach Dave Adolph about their big win.
With final exams and Christmas holidays right around the corner, the Dogs will hit the ice again on January 5, 2007 at 7:00, as they host the University of Regina Cougars. Support our Huskies by purchasing a Dogs on Ice history book, available through Huskie Hockey, for a great Christmas gift under the tree.
