Big Finish for McAvoy
Darren Zary - Saskatoon Star Phoenix
Cell phone in hand and lump in his throat, fifth-year University of Saskatchewan Huskies forward Keegan McAvoy remained on the Rutherford Rink bench for one last time following a home game.
He made a grand exit from the Old Barn with a pair of goals Saturday to help eliminate the Calgary Dinos.
McAvoy scored his first at the side of the net and his second, a real beauty, after cruising right in and rifling a shot past Talbot that played ring-around-the-rosy inside the net.
Keegan¹s done everything we¹ve asked him to do for the past 4 1/2 years, said U of S head coach Dave Adolph. For him to score and he's a goal-scorer and he has spent an awful lot of years here where he didn't get anything he's getting rewarded for his perseverance.
It was a tip of the goal-mask for McAvoy from all-star sophomore Huskie netminder Jeff Harvey, who recorded the shutout.
He's my roommate, too, so I couldn't happen to a better guy,' Harvey said of McAvoy, a former Kamloops Blazers captain. Keegan works really hard. To put those two goals in and the second was a beautiful goal, that was the lift we needed to get us the win.
DOG TALES: The Huskies are Canada West finalists for the 10th time in 11 years. They'll be searching for their fourth conference title during that span and first since 2000 . . . It is believed that the Dogs have not yet lost a playoff series at Rutherford Rink . . . The Huskies were without injured forwards Matt Girling and Myles Zimmer for the Calgary series. Both could be back in action at Calgary. Harvey, who was outstanding on Saturday, is also playing hurt with an undisclosed upper-body injury.
