SASKATOON SK - The University of Regina Cougars improved their record with their provincial rival University of Saskatchewan Huskies with a 5-4 victory over the CIS fourth-ranked Dogs at Rutherford Rink.

The first period saw the majority of the scoring, with both the Huskies and the Cougars scoring three apiece. The Huskies took an early lead in the game, with Jeff Schmidt and Curtis Austring putting the Huskies ahead 2-0 less than five minutes into the game. The Cougars got their first goal of the game at 6:23. A scramble in front of the Huskie net, Caine Pearpoint put in the loose puck. The game was tied at two each when Jordan McGillivray took a shot that deflected off a Huskie defender.

The only even strength goal of the first period came at 10:40 from Dustin Bru, who gave the Cougars their first lead of the game. Huskies captain Brent Twordik nabbed the final goal of the period, making it 3-3 going into the second.

Bru scored his second even strength goal of the game, regaining the Cougar lead at 4:41. The back-and-forth battle ensued. With the Huskies on the powerplay and firing shots on Cougar goalie Adam Ward, Stephen Mann grabbed a rebound and shot one past Ward.

Just over three minutes into the third period, Cougars centreman Jason Weitzel scored the game winner. The Huskies would have several more powerplay chances, with their last coming with 46 seconds to go in the game, but could not capitalize.

The Huskies outshot the Cougars 32-27. The Cougars were 3-8 in power play goal-attempts, while the Huskies were 4-12.

Regina improves to 7-7-3, while Saskatchewan drops to 10-6-1. Regina still sits four points back Saskatchewan for top spot in the Great Plains Division. The two teams meet again Saturday night in Regina, with the women's hockey teams meeting in Saskatoon at 7:00pm at Rutherford Rink.
