Huskies sweep Bears for first time in eight years
Nov 18
SASKATOON SK - The No. 10 Saskatchewan Huskies defeated the No. 1 Alberta Golden Bears 3-2 in regulation time, to earn a weekend sweep over their archrivals for the first time since 1998-99.
After an OT win last night, the Huskies came out strong again tonight, scoring back-to-back powerplay goals with less than two minutes left in the first period. In his first weekend back after being out with an injury, Trent Adamus (Saskatoon, 3rd yr) opening up the scoring at 18:28. Keegan McAvoy (Saskatoon, 5th yr) following suit just over a minute later, getting the puck past Bears goalkeeper Aaron Sorochan (Edmonton AB, 2nd yr).
The second period saw both team racking up penalties, with neither being able to take advantage of the man-advantage. Alberta was 0-3, while Saskatchewan was 0-4.
In the third period, Husky WHL Graduate of the Month Mason Wallin notched the game-winning goal at 1:26, once again on the powerplay. With just over 10 minutes left in the game, Bears forward Dylan Stanley (Edmonton, 2nd yr) ruined Jeff Harvey's (St. Albert AB, 2nd yr) perfect game, with an even strength goal. Jesse Gimblett (Newtonville ON, 1st yr) would add another at 12:54 but that's all the Golden Bears would get, as the hometown Huskies skated away with their second victory of the weekend.
Harvey made 29 saves between the pipes for the Dogs, while Sorochan made 24 for the Bears. Saskatchewan was 3/10 on the powerplay; Alberta was 0/9.
The last time the Huskies swept the Bears was in 1998-99 Canada West Final. The Bears then went on to win the CIS Championship in Saskatoon two weeks later.
With the win, the Huskies improve to 8-5-1. The Bears drop to 8-2-2. Saskatchewan will rest on a bye next week, while Alberta will travel to UBC.
