SASKATOON,SK - The No. 8 University of Calgary Dinos were in Saskatoon to take on the No. 4 University of Saskatchewan Huskies in men's hockey action on Friday night. The outcome was in the Dinos favour with a final score of 5-3.
The majority of goals took place in the first period. The first goal of the game went to number 2, Greg Park, and was assisted by Matt Girling and team captain, Brent Twordik. The first goal for the Dinos happened on a two-man advantage for Calgary, scored by Conlan Seder and assisted
by Daniel LaPointe. The next two goals for Calgary also occurred on powerplays by Wade Davis and Jarret Lukin. With only five seconds left in the first period, the Huskies tried to turn things around with a goal by Brett Novak, assisted by Jeff Schmidt and assistant captain, Keegan McAvoy.
The second period saw a Dinos goal by Aaron Richards to make the score 4-2. Calgary's Jarret Lukin got the puck past Huskies netminder, Jeff Harvey, to clinch the win for the Dinos, but the Huskies didn't go down without a fight, with a last-ditch attempt to score by K. McAvoy at 19:53,
who also went unassisted in the goal.
Huskies goalie, Jeff Harvey made 37 out of 42 saves, while Dinos
netminder, Jordan McLaughlin made 31 saves out of 34 shots on net. With
the new rules this year, players and coaches were feeling the pressure
with 16 penalties for the Dinos and 22 penalties for the Huskies.
"It was an odd game," commented Dinos head coach, Scott Atkinson. "The
way the game was getting called with the new rules, there were a lot of
penalties. Both teams have to be more disciplined. It was just very
difficult for both teams to get the momentum going."
The next game for the Huskies (4-3) will be on Saturday, Oct. 28th at 7:00pm.
The Dinos will head home to play Regina, Nov. 3rd.
