Dogs schooled by Golden Bears on power play

They turned a page in history Sunday night in Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) hockey. Literally.
For the first time since introducing the modern CIS game sheet, statisticians at Rutherford Rink had to use a second page.
That goes to show how many penalties were called
during the final game of the annual Huskie Hockey
Classic pre-season tournament. The defending national
champion University of Alberta Golden Bears and the
host University of Saskatchewan Huskies combined
for 154 penalty minutes in the third period alone. Head
statistician Bruce Gordon and company may still be
doing the number crunching.
“That was a quantity penalty-fest, that wasn’t a quality penalty-fest,” said U of S head coach Dave Adolph after Alberta won 5-1. “We got sucked into about four penalties and then we had a couple of undisciplined penalties. We have a very frustrated group of guys who are sick and tired of getting goaded into penalties. They’ve just got to learn.
“But I loved the way our young guys played.”
As referees continue to clamp down on infractions,
power plays alone will decide hockey games. Alberta
scored four times on the PP — twice with a two-man
advantage.
“That’s the Bears,” said Adolph. “They draw you into penalties and then they bury you.” Dylan Stanley, with two, Ian McDonald, Scott Henkelman and Ben Kilgour scored for the Bears. Matt Bergen replied with a late power-play tally for the Dogs, who outshot the visitors 38-36. Alberta was 4-for-14 on the power play. Saskatchewan was 1-for-13. Mutual respect turned into mutual disrespect by the third. “You’re going to get these kind of games in pre-season,” said Alberta coach Eric Thurston. In Sunday’s afternoon game, the Regina Cougars downed the Calgary Dinos 5-3. Alberta finished the tournament 2-0, Saskatchewan and Regina were both 1-1 and Calgary 0-2.
Huskies 8, Dinos 2
Saturday, the Dogs dumped Calgary 8-2. Jeff Schmidt paced Saskatchewan with a pair of goals. Four rookies — Colin Patterson, Brad Erickson, Jon Bubnick and Brett Novak — each scored once, along with fifth-year Huskies forward Keegan McAvoy and Mason Wallin. In Saturday’s other game, Alberta edged Regina Cougars 3-2 in
overtime.
