Hockey Huskies have empty feeling in series opener

By Darren Zary of The StarPhoenix

Golden Bears 2, Huskies 0

Dave Adolph apologized for sounding like a broken record.

“They got a break; we didn’t; how many times have I said that before?” Adolph, the head coach of the University of Saskatchewan Huskies, said after his squad dropped the opening game of the Canada West conference men’s hockey final 2-0 to the Alberta Golden Bears before 2,200 fans Friday at Clare Drake Arena in Edmonton.

Game 2 in the best-of-three series goes tonight. Both clubs will compete in the Telus Cup national championship in two weeks in Edmonton.

After a scoreless opening period, Tim Krymusa opened the scoring on a breakaway at 15:21 of the second period. Justin Wallin added an emptynet goal with four seconds left in the game.

“They got a guy in behind us on a broken play in the neutral zone and he (Krymusa) buried it,” Adolph said.

Former Prince Albert Raiders goalie Aaron Sorochan recorded his first shutout in Canadian Interuniversity Sport, making 22 saves.

U of S goalie Jeff Harvey stopped 25 shots.

With 3:55 remaining in the third, Dean Beuker was hauled down and the Huskies were awarded a power play. Matt Girling had a glorious opportunity with the man-advantage, but Sorochan somehow kept the puck out. With Harvey pulled for an extra attacker, Saskatchewan had a number of chances in final minute, but the Dogs couldn’t squeeze in the equalizer. Alberta was 0-for-8 on the power play. Saskatchewan was 0-for-5.
