Undefeated streak continues

SASKATOON SK - The Huskie men's hockey team opened up 2006 with a win over their provincial rivals, the Regina Cougars, extending their undeated streak to 13 games.

Regina opened up the scoring in the first period. On the powerplay, Jaosn Weitzel put the puck past Jeff Harvey at 16:05. Though the Huskies outshot the Cougars 12-8 in the first period, they couldn't manage to get a goal by goaltender Clint Chalmers.

The Huskies first goal came from assistant captain Curtis Austring at 7:10 of the second. Teammate Colin Johnson added another eight minutes later to give the Huskies the lead going into the third.

The Cougars would tie it up only 23 seconds into the final period, another powerplay goal, this time from Lance Herauf. But Canada West leading scorer Dean Beuker would get the Huskies game winner at 7:49.

The Huskies outshot the Cougars 41-24. The Cougars were 2-4 on the powerplay, while the Huskies were 0-8. The game's three stars were Austring (Sask), Chalmers (Regina) and Harvey (Sask).

The two teams get set to meet on Sat, Jan. 7 in Regina. The Huskies will be at home again next weekend, hosting the Calgary Dinos on Jan. 13 and 14 at Rutherford Rink. Puck drop is 7:00pm both nights.
