SASKATOON SK - The University of Saskatchewan Huskies scored three times in the first period, all on powerplays, to defeat the visiting UBC Thunderbirds 3-2 at Rutherford Rink. For the third straight game, Canada West leading scorer Dean Beuker scored the game winning goal.
The T-Birds didn't give the Huskies an easy win, though, finding the back of the Dogs net in the second and third periods.
Rookie Matt Girling opened the scoring at 7:28 on a Huskie powerplay. Assists went to Beuker and Captain Brent Twordik. Less than a minute later, third-year centreman Mason Wallin put the puck past UBC netminder Gerry Festa. The powerplay assists came from Keegan McAvoy and Colin Johnson. And then just over a minute later another powerplay goal came from Dean Beuker, from Colin Johnson and Stephen Mann, which ended up being the game winning goal. The Huskies outshot the T-Birds 15-3 in the first period.
The second period saw the T-Birds outshoot the Huskies 10-9, with a powerplay goal from the visitors at 19:47. Peter Hay put one past Huskie netminder Jeff Harvey. Once again in the third, the T-Birds found a hole, with Jarrett Winn scoring.
That would be all the T-Birds would get though. The Huskies outshot the 'Birds 39-21. The Huskies were 3/9 on the powerplay, while the Thunderbirds were 1/10.
The Thunderbirds drop to 7-11-1 in conference action, while the Huskies improve to 15-3-3, maintaining their number one position in Canada West.
