Huskies Sweep Bisons
WINNIPEG MB - The Saskatchewan Huskies swept the weekend series over the Manitoba Bisons with a 5-2 victory on Saturday night at Max Bell Arena. The Huskies extend their winning steak to 12 games and also extend their lead in the Canada West Great Plains division with a 11-2-3 record while the Bisons drop below .500 with a 7-8-1 record.
The Huskies opened the scoring early on their first shot only 25 secondsinto the game. Jeff Schmidt teamed up with Beuker and Twordik with a threeon two opportunity and capitalized to open the games scoring. Midwaythrough the first the Bisons found themselves in penalty trouble with twoplayers in the box and the Huskies made the best of it. Curtis Austring tooka feed from Keegan McAvoy in front of the net and beat Krister Toews toincrease their lead to two.
Early in the second the Bisons cut into the Husky lead taking advantage of apower play themselves. Paul Deniset got his first of two on the night tofinally beat Husky net minder Thomas Vicars. The one goal didn't frustratethe Huskies however, and within four minutes the Huskies found the back ofthe net three more times to increase their lead taking a four goaladvantage.
Although Deniset got his second goal in the third to make it a 5-2 Huskylead the Bisons couldn't narrow the gap anymore. The Bisons did outshootthe Huskies 35-20 during the game but solid goaltending by Vicars gave theHuskies the victory.
The Huskies now break for Christmas and will be home in January to host their provincial rivals, the University of Regina Cougars.
