SEE LAST MINUTE OF THE CANADA WEST FINAL

Edmonton, AB – In 1980 the University of Saskatchewan Huskies would quickly become commonly referred to as the Hustlin’ Huskies. Thanks in part to a new coach, Dave King, the Dogs took on a whole new look and work ethic, and the famous 1980 Dave King quote “nobody outworks the dogs” still applies today. It was all on the line for the Canada West Championship on Sunday at Clare Drake Arena; who would want it more? After a thrilling 3-2 triple overtime win by the Huskies Saturday night they seemingly had all the momentum heading into the final game of best-of-three series. Fatigue would definitely be playing factor for both teams as after over 95 minutes of hockey just a night earlier, exhaustion would weigh heavily on the legs of the Huskies and the Bears. In the end, it was the Bears that seemed to be the team most affected by the late game a night earlier, as the Huskies were relentless in their attack in the third period. Rallying from a 3-1 deficit to score three unanswered goals, two in the third, to win the Canada West Final 4-3.

After the game the latest Huskies hero, Colin Patterson, who scored the winning goal with just 2:50 remaining in the game, was just happy to be moving on.

“I mean it really doesn’t matter who gets the goal, just as long as we get the wins I’m happy. I’ve been pretty fortunate to be in the right place at the right time, but really it could have been anyone of us.”

It would be the Bears who came out of the gate with a jump in their step, looking to make-up for last night’s heart-breaking defeat. At 3:23 of the first period Alberta would get the games first power-play, but solid Huskies penalty-killing didn’t even allow the Bears to get a shot. With 11 seconds left in the penalty the Bears would then take a penalty of their own and the Dogs cashed in. After a great feed from Curtis Austring, Keegan McAvoy broke in on goal, made a nifty move and snapped the puck by a sprawling Bears goalie. With a 1-0 lead the Dogs looked for more after another Bears penalty, but couldn’t capitalize. Penalties had been the story all weekend, and with the Bears on the man advantage, they would make good. At the 10:19 mark of the first period, Alberta’s Derek Price took a point shot that was deflected by a Huskies stick right past Harvey and into an open cage.

After the teams traded power-play chances the Bears would get a glorious opportunity to take the lead, but Harvey’s catching snagged the blast and thwarted that scoring chance in a hurry. With 53 seconds left in the period the Bears would get yet another power-play and Harlan Anderson slammed home a goal with 2.7 seconds left in the first. Shots after the first period were 11-7 in favour of the Bears.

In the second period the Dogs set the tone, completely dominating the first 10 minutes of the second; the Huskies controlled most of the play, nearly scoring on a couple of occasions. The Bears Aaron Sorochan stood his ground, getting lucky on a Huskies shot that squeaked through his pads, but just missed catching the mesh. Saskatchewan continued to pour on the pressure but just couldn’t buy a goal, either just missing the net or getting stopped by Sorochan.

The Bears then went on the attack after a Huskies penalty with 5:29 left in the period, as an errant Matt Girling stick hit Sorochan in the face, slashing was the call. Alberta would make the Huskies pay again on the power-play with their third power-play goal of the game, as Bryan Woogler tipped a point shot right past Harvey. Saskatchewan would respond quickly however, as a great pass by Austring found Mason Wallin flipped a top corner shot over Sorochan’s shoulder and into the net. The Huskies would then get a power-play with 46 seconds left in the second looking to tie the game. While they wouldn’t cash in yet again on the man-advantage, the Huskies had a lot of momentum headed to the third down 3-2.

The Dogs wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the carrying over power-play time, but got an even strength goal at the 3:58 mark of third. After working over the Bears in their zone shift after shift Keegan McAvoy shot a low drive that zipped past Sorochan. Assists on the play went to Brent Twordik and Mark Hinz who did great work to find an open McAvoy. The Dogs didn’t let up and were relentless in their attack, pinning the Bears in their own zone once again. As the teams traded chances down the stretch, the clock continued to tick down with overtime looming.

With less than five minutes left in the game it seemed as if overtime was a certainty, but with the Huskies buzzing in the Bears zone, last weekend’s overtime hero, Colin Patterson, found a way to get the job done again. With the Huskies cycling the puck the Bears got running around in their zone as Jeff Schmidt muscled his way past a Bears defensemen, chipped it over to a waiting Brent Twordik who quickly got the puck out front of the net where Patterson ripped a low bottom right shot past a stunned Aaron Sorochan. With just 2:50 seconds left the Bears tried desperately to tie the game, pulling their goalie for the last 1:11, but just couldn’t get a clear shot to the net as the Huskies blocked shots all over the ice. As the clock hit zeroes the Bears and over 2,000 fans could only look on as the Huskies poured out onto the ice in a hurry. Leading the celebration was the Huskies Jeff Harvey, who played exceptionally well all weekend.

“I don’t think there’s a better feeling I’ve ever had in hockey then right now, and that probably goes for every guy on this team. To win here, in their barn, in front of their fans is something special,” said Harvey. “This team is different this year, we just keep things positive and never give up.”

With the Bears being the favoured team coupled with the fact that Alberta just does not seem to lose at the Clare Drake Arena in the playoffs makes this Huskies series win even that more incredible. To make it even more interesting is the fact that the Bears were 18-3 on the season heading to the final period with a lead, but just couldn’t hold when they needed it the most. For the Huskies head coach, Dave Adolph, this win was sweet.

“We came here with a purpose and that was to go to Moncton, and while we had a rough first period I thought we were full marks in the last two periods of the game. This wasn’t about the Bears and what they were doing, it was about what we had to do to get two wins this weekend and we did that,” said Adolph. “The games that mattered all year, we had every guy doing their job, and that’s what champions are made of, people just doing their job. Our purpose was Moncton 2007 and we never stopped believing.”

The Huskies capture their 14th Canada West title, and will now head to Moncton for the 2007 CIS University Cup March 22nd to 25th, in search of their second CIS Championship in the University of Saskatchewan’s history. Oddly enough, the last and only time the Huskies won the CIS Championship was in the same place it will be held this year, Moncton, Newbrunswick.
