Huskies Defeat No. 1 Ranked Bears
SASKATOON, SK - The No. 10 ranked University of Saskatchewan Huskies took down the No. 1 ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears in hockey action at the Rutherford Rink, Friday, in a showdown that went into overtime with a score of 5-4.
The first goal for the Huskies happened just five minutes into the game. Jeff Schmidt (Kindersley, 3rd yr) scored on a short handed goal from a pass at the neutral zone. The next goal went to number 21, Mark Hinz (Waldheim, 3rd yr) with another textbook shot from halfway down the ice in the Bears zone. The assist for that goal went to Alekcei McAvoy (Saskatoon, 3rd yr). The Golden Bears were starting to feel the pressure from the Huskies, so the goal by Richard Kelly (Wetaskiwin, 3rd yr) of Alberta was definitely a morale booster for their team. However, the confidence of the Bears didn\'t last long after a third goal by the Huskies, this time scored by Trent Adamus (Saskatoon, 3rd yr) and assisted by Curtis Austring (Stewart Valley, 3rd yr) in a mad scramble at Alberta\'s net.
The second period saw the Huskies up 3-1, but that score wouldn\'t last long. The next goal was scored, once again, by Schmidt after Evan Schafer shot the puck and bounced off of Bears goalie, Aaron Sorochan (Edmonton, 2nd yr), making the score 4-1. The Huskies were feeling good about the three point advantage when a scramble occurred in Jeff Harvey\'s (St. Albert, 2nd yr) end. Ian McDonald (Edmonton, 1st yr) managed to break away from the mess at the net to score on Harvey. A few minutes later, Ben Kilgour made a breakaway shot to close the gap at 4-3.
The third period saw the final goal of regulation time by Bears defensive player, Derek Price (Fruitvale, 1st yr), and assisted by McDonald. This meant the game was going into five minute overtime. It was still neck and neck for both teams until Brett Novak (Melville, 1st yr) broke away from the group to score, assisted by Alekcei McAvoy.
\"Four lines contributed tonight,\" commented Huskies head coach, Dave Adolph. \"Everyone found a way to play the game tonight. We have been on a roller coster all year - one up, one down - so we never know what to expect.\"
Adolph also commented on the teams confidence level throughout the game. \"We\'re a team that hasn\'t played with confidence,\" he remarked. \"When we do have confidence, we\'re fine. When we lost our confidence at four (tie game), we started doing things that we\'re not good at. We started playing too conservatively.\"
The two teams will go head to head again Saturday evening at the Rutherford Rink in Saskatoon at 7:00pm. Don\'t forget, by signing up for the HUSKIES FANS EMAIL list, you\'ll be entitled to player info, game stories, special events and upcoming promotions. Sign up today at www.huskies.usask.ca
