Dinos sweep Dogs by mistake

Turnovers by Huskies lead to three Calgary goals
By Darren Zary of The StarPhoenix

Dinos 4, Huskies 1

Three turnovers equaled three goals.

That was the difference as the University of Saskatchewan Huskies lost 4-1 to the University of Calgary Dinos in Canada West conference men’s hockey Saturday night at Rutherford Rink.

With four rookie defencemen in the lineup — Mark Hinz making his Canadian Interuniversity Sport debut — the Huskies took a major hit in the win column. They dropped to 4-4-0, while the upstart Dinos improved to 6-2-0.

“Those were three gimmes,” said U of S coach Dave Adolph. “That’s a young defence and they made some critical errors. As a result, they (Dinos) get the win, but I thought we had a better effort (than Friday).

“Am I frustrated? No, I knew it would be a challenge this whole first half. We lose Manner (Stephen Mann) and Endo (Derek Endicott) and we throw all our
young guys out there. Those young guys made huge mistakes tonight. I’m not giving up on them; I’m not frustrated with them.

“We’re only going to get better.”

Mistakes in the defensive zone led directly to Calgary’s first three goals, two in the third period after rookies Hinz and Evan Schafer coughed up the puck.

Jarret Lukin paced the Dinos with a pair of goals. Lukin, who is featured on Global TV’s Making the Cut: Last Man Standing, had four goals in the two-game series.
“We’ve been on a roll,” said Lukin. “We knew this was going to be a tough building — I don’t think our coach (Scott Atkinson) had even won a game here — so to win the first one for him and the second one for the boys, it’s just a good feeling.”

Saskatchewan outshot Calgary 44-33.

“It was like skating on eggshells after (Friday’s) fiasco,” coach Atkinson said. “Both teams were, like, ‘What exactly can we do (without getting a penalty?)’

“We’re not fooling ourselves. We had some success here, finally, but we’re crazy if we think we got anymore than a couple of wins in the middle of the season.”

Trevor Galan and Ryan Annesley also scored for the Dinos.
Rookie Brett Parker had a short-handed tally for the Dogs, who welcomed back veteran forward Trent Adamus.

“We haven’t been swept in this barn in a long time,” Adamus said. “We worked pretty hard, but obviously not hard enough. We could have worked a little smarter and definitely need to score on our chances. We’re not going to win too many games with one goal.”
