Huskies Beuker named MVP

By Darren Zary of The StarPhoenix

Dean Beuker prides himself in being a multidimensional player and, today, the fourth-year University of Saskatchewan Huskies men’s hockey player has multiple major Canada West awards in his grasp.
Beuker — the Canada West scoring champion with 22 goals and 25 assists for 47 points in 27 games — has been named the conference MVP. He will be the Canada West nominee for the Joseph Sullivan Trophy, which will be awarded to the most valuable player for Canadian Interuniversity Sport men’s hockey prior to the Telus University Cup.
Beuker, a 25-year-old product of Watson, has also won the UBC Alumni Trophy for sportsmanship and ability. He’s also up for the national award for most sportsmanlike player.
He relishes the two awards equally.
“I’ve never been an MVP, but I’ve been up for the sportsman thing before and I pride myself just as much on that,” says Beuker. “It’s just like winning the scoring title. You surround yourself with good people and it makes things easy and all the personal accomplishments will come. Beuker has only 38 penalty minutes through 37 exhibition, regular-season and playoff games this season. The only blemish came during the secondlast regular-season game in which he was handed a game misconduct against Regina. Beuker has 29 goals and 38 assists for 67 points overall. In two playoff games thus far, he has two goals and seven assists for nine points. Derek Endicott was Saskatchewan’s nominee for the Canada West’s top defenceman. That award went to Alberta’s Chris Ovington. Rookie goalie Jeff Harvey was not eligible for the top freshman award because of his age.
