2005-06 CANADA WEST HOCKEY ALL-STAR TEAMS ANNOUNCED
SASKATCHEWAN’S DEAN BEUKER NAMED TO FIRST TEAM FOR FOURTH TIME

All seven Canada West Hockey teams are represented on the 2005-06 Canada West Hockey all-star teams, which were announced by the conference on Wednesday February 22, 2006.

Leading the way is the University of Alberta Golden Bears with six players selected to the conference’s three post-season teams.

The University of Calgary Dinos are second with five selections and are followed by the University of Saskatchewan Huskies with four players and the University of Manitoba Bisons with two selections. Wrapping up the post-season selections are the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds, the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns and the University of Regina Cougars with one player apiece.

The Canada West Hockey first and second all-star teams and all-freshman team were selected by a vote of the seven Canada West Hockey coaches.

For only the fourth time since the inauguration of the conference all-star teams in 1956-57, and for the first time since 1992-93, there was a tie for the goaltending position on the Canada West Hockey first all-star team. A pair of freshmen netminders – Jeff Harvey of Saskatchewan and Alberta’s Aaron Sorochan – received the exact same number and breakdown of votes in the balloting to share the first team position.

Joining Harvey and Sorochan on the Canada West Hockey first all-star team are Alberta defencemen Chris Ovington and Perry Johnson, while the forward line is composed of three of the conference’s five top scorers.

Canada West Hockey scoring champion Dean Beuker of Saskatchewan was the top vote getter among forwards and led the conference in scoring for the third time in the last four seasons with 22-25-47 in 27 games. He was joined by linemate Brent Twordik and Alberta’s Ben Thomson.

Harvey led the conference in both goals-against average and save percentage with a 2.03 GAA and .926 save percentage in 15 games and tied for the lead with two shutouts in his first season of CIS hockey. Sorochan topped the conference in wins with 15 and was second with a 2.29 GAA.

Beuker’s 47 points were a single-season career-high and earned him the Dave “Sweeney” Schriner Trophy as the conference’s leading scorer for the third time. He becomes only the fourth player in Canada West Hockey history to win the scoring title three times, joining Vern Pachal of Alberta (1957, 1958, 1960), Jarret Zukiwsky of Lethbridge (1994, 1995, 1996) and Alberta’s Russ Hewson (1999, 2000, 2001). With the 47 points, Beuker ties for the Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) scoring title with Jesse Pyatt of the University of Guelph Gryphons (26-21-47 in 24 games) and Acadia University Axemen forward Kevin Baker (24-23-47 in 28 games).

For Beuker, his selection is his fourth consecutive appearance on the first team, making the Huskies’ forward only the second player in conference history to be named a first-team all-star four times. Alberta defenceman Jeff Zorn was the first player to accomplish the feat, being named to the first all-star team from 2001-02 to 2004-05. With this season’s all-star selection, Beuker has been named to the Canada West hockey first all-star team in four consecutive seasons dating back to his freshman season of 2002-03, when he was also named to the conference’s all-freshman team.

Twordik ended the season tied for third place in the conference scoring race with 11-24-35 while Thomson netted 17-16-33 in 27 games to finish fifth in scoring and third in goal scoring.

Beuker is one of seven players making a repeat appearance on the conference’s post-season all-star teams, but is the only player making a repeat appearance on the first all-star team.

Regina’s Clint Chalmers earned the second team goaltending position, while Brett Thurston of Calgary and Jay Langager of Lethbridge were the two defencemen selected. The forward line is composed of Manitoba’s Paul Deniset and Kevin Saurette and Calgary freshman Jarret Lukin. Both Bisons forwards are making repeat all-star appearances as it is the third all-star selection for Deniset, who was a first team all-star a year ago and a member of the second team in 2004. Saurette, a member of the 2001-02 all-freshman team, is making his second consecutive appearance on the second all-star team this season.

As was the case on the conference’s first all-star team, Saskatchewan’s Jeff Harvey and Aaron Sorchan of Alberta were tied for the goaltending position on the Canada West Hockey all-freshman team. Both Harvey and Sorochan received the same number of votes in the balloting and become only the third pair of players to tie for a position on the team.

The first two players to tie for a position on the conference’s all-freshman team were Shannon Briske of Saskatchewan and Mitch Grant of Manitoba, who tied for the third forward position on the 1995-96 team. A season later, defencemen Scott Laluk of Manitoba and Mike Piersol of Calgary tied for the second defenceman position on the 1996-97 all-freshman team.

Joining Harvey and Sorochan on this season’s all-freshman team are three members of the Calgary Dinos. Travis Friedley and Andre Blanchette man the blueline, while Jarret Lukin, who was also named to the conference’s second all-star team, is one of three forwards selected to the squad. Joining Lukin on the forward line are Alberta’s Dylan Stanley and Darrell May of the UBC Thunderbirds. Stanley led conference freshmen in scoring, tying for fifth place in the scoring race with 14-19-33 in 28 games.

Harvey and Sorochan become the ninth and tenth players to be named to both the Canada West Hockey first all-star team and all-freshman team in the same season.

To be eligible for freshman status, a player must be 21-years-old or younger as of December 31, 2005 and must not have played intercollegiate or professional hockey at any level prior to participating at his CIS school.
